Covid-19's Impact On Local Refugee Communities
"The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything" - Albert Einstein
The Impact:
The COVID-19 pandemic has addressed various disparities in economic and social equality. These inequities emanate from policies that display an inability to emphasize issues that resonate with a broader section of the masses. As a result, local citizens encounter an extensive range of difficulties that encumber their ability to sustain a stable lifestyle. However, refugees living in low- and middle-income countries are especially vulnerable to the socioeconomic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the Center for Global Development, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a sixty percent increase in poverty amongst global refugee populations and has exacerbated their exposure to reliable employment opportunities. Millions of refugees residing within low- and middle-income nations experience these adverse effects. This population already suffered several impediments to economic participation before COVID-19, including obstacles that were unique from those experienced by host populations and prevented them from finding decent work as defined by the standard. Increasingly inward-looking policymaking, driven by nationalism and coupled with rising unemployment resulting from the potential global economic recession, will make it more difficult to argue for expanded economic inclusion for refugees in low- and middle-income countries. These blaring incongruities have prompted many policymakers to consider and formulate robust and impactful approaches to alleviate the socioeconomic disparity plaguing refugee communities. Nevertheless, COVID-19 has shown that efforts to expand economic inclusion for refugees are more relevant than ever. Facilitating greater economic inclusion will enable refugees to enter the labor market and provide for their own socioeconomic needs.
